Learning how to drive can be a traumatic experience not only for a child but also for the parent. I remember as a teen driver actually thinking that perhaps taking the bus for the rest of my life might not be so bad. It’s hard enough trying to tame a car and make it respond to your every command; or watching your parent or adult teacher stomp on their imaginary break on the passenger side. And while your gripping the steering wheel with all your might there’s some insensitive jerk zooming around you and making hand gestures at you while you’re just trying to exit the freeway!

After hearing so many of these stories Tyler’s parents, Karen and Alan Klayman, decided something had to be done and came up with the idea for “student at the wheel” magnets. Klayman says, “A mother of three will do anything and everything to make their lives better.

Karen thought the target market would be parents of new drivers, but following market research she found that her magnets had just as much of an appeal with teenagers. STUDENT at the wheel has 3 new designs that were suggested by teenagers (Cheetah, the Pink Zebra, and Pop Art (tie dye)).

Karen says that the magnets give student drivers an extra layer of protection because when people see the magnets “they say  ‘oh wow’  that’s a new driver lets cut them some slack and give them some space.” If parents aren’t able to go through the time or expense to send their children to driving schools that have cars labeled with “student driver” on them, these magnets are a great solution for providing  an easily identifiable notice to surrounding traffic. These extremely reasonably priced and fashionable may just save a few lives.

Mymompreneur: What has been your biggest business challenge as a mompreneur?
Karen: My biggest challenge has been believing in myself, and telling myself that I can do it. That is being a Mom, and also being a business woman. Also believing in my abilities as an entrepreneur. There are many ups and downs in a new business, but you must always be up as a Mom.

Mymompreneur: What are you most proud of?
Karen: I am most proud that I can make New Drivers’ lives a little easier for them. I am just as proud to know that people buy my product. When I see one on the road, I know I am making a difference.

Mymompreneur: What would you change or do differently if you could start over?
Karen: Although it is never too late to do this, I probably would have got funding in the beginning.

Mymompreneur: How do you find work life balance as a mompreneur?
Karen: Being a Mom comes first. Finding the time in business can be challenging. But when things have to get done, you do them. Sometime delegating tasks and getting people to do things can be a great benefit.

Mymompreneur: What advice would you share with other mompreneurs or women interested in working for themselves?
Karen: Do it. Listen to advice, but you make the last call. Don’t let others discourage you. Many times people want you to fail. It makes them feel better. My life experience has been that you learn 100% by making mistakes.
