To quote Iyanla Vanzant, HELP!!!!!!!! I wasn’t born with a PDA in my hand. In fact, they weren’t even invented yet. The PC wasn’t even invented. Therefore, this is all new ground.

I have tried Linked-in. So far, I have had acquaintences ask me to become a part of their networks. I have had a few people respond to my request for recommendations. But when I see a job at a company where I know someone and I ask that they either present my resume or forward it to someone who can, I get nothing!

Since I know that I am online, it can’t be bad breath! So why are people so onesided?

Facebook seems to be the new email. Once I allow people whom I think are pretty sedate to become facebook friends, strange things happen. I discover their online persona. I am suddenly being hugged, tagged and everything that I did not intend to do.

If I engaged in all of this activity, I would never have time to look for a job. Even the job boards have networks! I have never been so networked in my life and I am still not getting anywhere. Somebody please help me!

    Hi Mamie,
I totally understand what you are saying. Facebook has so many application and your new friends will use them. There is a way to remove that activity from your wall which will help you get rid of that, and I would be happy to share that with you. There are also many ways to interact with others on social media that will get better results. I help my clients use social media to grow their businesses by using their unique voice and attracting the clients they really want.

But, If you are searching for a job, LinkedIn is the place to be. Try to associate with groups in your local area and in the field you are interested in.

I hope I have helped you some!

Thank you Janet! You’re absolutely right, LinkeIn is a great resource. Whether on LinkedIn or Mymompreneur, the good way to get access to many of the things we need is to create referral partners. This extends well beyond selling a product and hoping someone will be interested. Do you have any advice on building those relationships using social media networks?

Social networking has been such an amazing experience. I have met people across the globe and invited to far away countries all because of the relationships I have forged using twitter and Facebook! If you’re not dialed in, you should be!

While I’ve used Facebook and Twitter, I’m still new to LinkedIn. What are the biggest benefit of joining? Would my profile be access by potential employers?

Any feedback would be helpful, thanks!

Hi Eva, The great thing about Linkedin in that businesses, collegues, and potential clients use it heavily to find you. Use Linkedin to post a professionally written bio and some information about your role in your company. If you own your own company you can even list it at Linkedin. As it’s free to to you, it’s good for your business to create as many opportunities for visibility as possible.
